Soulmate by birth date: what your birthday can and cannot tell you
Your birthday can point to a sign and a traditional match. It cannot name a person. Here is what it does give you, sign by sign.

Soulmate by birth date is a search for a shortcut: type in a day, get a name or a sign. The honest version is smaller and more useful. Your birthday gives astrology a sun sign, and each sign has traditional matches. It gives numerology a number to work with. It cannot tell you who your soulmate is, when you will meet them or what they will be called. Below is what your birthday does give you, all 12 signs with their traditional matches, and how our reading uses your date.
What your birth date gives astrology
Astrology is a belief system, and it is worth saying what it is before using it. Britannica’s entry on the zodiac states it plainly: “Astrology is not supported by science. No correlation has been found between birth dates and personality or intelligence.” The same entry notes that the belief that personality follows the sign the Sun was in at your birth is widespread, and that in a 2022 poll 27 percent of Americans said they believed in astrology.
If you enjoy it as a way to reflect on yourself and the people you like, that is a fine use. Just do not treat it as evidence.
Your sun sign comes from month and day
The sun sign is the simplest thing a birthday gives you. Britannica lists the 12 signs with their dates, for example Aries from March 21 to April 19 and Pisces from February 19 to March 20. Only the month and the day matter for this. Two people born on the same day in different years share a sun sign.
Sources differ by a day at the edges, and the dates shift by a day in some years, so if you were born close to a boundary, your sign may depend on which source you use. Britannica adds a note that surprises people: because of the precession of the equinoxes, “the dates of the zodiac signs no longer correspond to the astronomical constellations in which the Sun actually appears.” The signs are a calendar convention, not a map of the sky as it looks today.
Element and modality
Each sign belongs to one of four elements (fire, earth, air, water) and one of three modalities. Britannica describes the modalities this way: cardinal is “related to beginnings,” fixed to “sustaining,” and mutable to “changing.” Aries is fire and cardinal. Taurus is earth and fixed. Gemini is air and mutable. These two labels, more than the sign name itself, drive most of the traditional matching.
| Sign | Dates | Element, modality |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | March 21 to April 19 | Fire, cardinal |
| Taurus | April 20 to May 20 | Earth, fixed |
| Gemini | May 21 to June 21 | Air, mutable |
| Cancer | June 22 to July 22 | Water, cardinal |
| Leo | July 23 to August 22 | Fire, fixed |
| Virgo | August 23 to September 22 | Earth, mutable |
| Libra | September 23 to October 23 | Air, cardinal |
| Scorpio | October 24 to November 21 | Water, fixed |
| Sagittarius | November 22 to December 21 | Fire, mutable |
| Capricorn | December 22 to January 19 | Earth, cardinal |
| Aquarius | January 20 to February 18 | Air, fixed |
| Pisces | February 19 to March 20 | Water, mutable |
Dates, elements and modalities are from Britannica’s zodiac table.
Britannica’s table also lists three personality words for each sign, which gives a feel for each element:
- Fire: Aries is described as energetic, courageous and impulsive; Leo as creative, generous and domineering; Sagittarius as adventurous, honest and tactless.
- Earth: Taurus is reliable, practical and stubborn; Virgo analytical, hardworking and critical; Capricorn disciplined, responsible and unforgiving.
- Air: Gemini is curious, quick-witted and inconsistent; Libra diplomatic, cooperative and indecisive; Aquarius independent, intellectual and detached.
- Water: Cancer is loyal, protective and moody; Scorpio passionate, resourceful and jealous; Pisces artistic, compassionate and escapist.
Each list holds a strength and a shadow side, which is a fair reminder that no sign is all good or all difficult. Britannica’s own caution applies to every word above: no correlation has been found between birth dates and personality.
Why a full chart needs more than your birthday
A sun sign is only one point in a much bigger picture. Britannica defines a horoscope as “a chart of the heavens, showing the relative positions of the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and the ascendant and midheaven signs of the zodiac at a specific moment in time,” and says an individual horoscope “usually plots the moment of birth.” So a full birth chart is built from the moment you were born, not from the date alone, and it includes far more than your sun sign.
That is why quick sun-sign matching is a light touch, more like a horoscope column than a chart reading. It is fun and it can start a conversation. It is not a diagnosis of who will suit you.
The traditional soulmate matches, by sign
There is no source that says a given sign’s soulmate is a particular sign. What astrologers do describe is the relationship between two signs, called an aspect, and each aspect has a traditional reading.
- Trine. Signs of the same element are 120 degrees apart. Wikipedia says the signs in each element “are very comfortable and compatible with one another.” Cafe Astrology’s compatibility grid puts it this way: “Your styles in love are similar enough to understand, and different enough to be exciting.”
- Sextile. Signs 60 degrees apart, which in the traditional scheme pairs fire with air and earth with water. Cafe Astrology reads it as: “You appreciate each other’s styles in love. It’s easy to collaborate with one another.”
- Opposite. Signs 180 degrees apart. Cafe Astrology says opposite signs “find each other fascinating, frustrating, and intriguing”, all at the same time.
Here is every sign with its easier matches: the two same-element signs as trines and the two signs 60 degrees away as sextiles. The dates for each sign are in the table above.
| Sign | Trine (same element) | Sextile (60 degrees) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo, Sagittarius | Gemini, Aquarius |
| Taurus | Virgo, Capricorn | Cancer, Pisces |
| Gemini | Libra, Aquarius | Aries, Leo |
| Cancer | Scorpio, Pisces | Taurus, Virgo |
| Leo | Aries, Sagittarius | Gemini, Libra |
| Virgo | Taurus, Capricorn | Cancer, Scorpio |
| Libra | Gemini, Aquarius | Leo, Sagittarius |
| Scorpio | Cancer, Pisces | Virgo, Capricorn |
| Sagittarius | Aries, Leo | Libra, Aquarius |
| Capricorn | Taurus, Virgo | Scorpio, Pisces |
| Aquarius | Gemini, Libra | Aries, Sagittarius |
| Pisces | Cancer, Scorpio | Taurus, Capricorn |
The magnetic match is the opposite sign, and opposites come in six pairs: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces.
Trines follow Wikipedia’s article on triplicity; the sextile column is worked out from the order of the zodiac; opposites follow Wikipedia’s article on astrological signs. Each sign name in the table opens its own page, with every pairing explained and what astrology writers say that sign looks for in a partner.
How to use the table
Find your sign, then read across. If you are Aries, tradition says Leo and Sagittarius feel familiar, Gemini and Aquarius feel easy, and Libra is the one that fascinates and frustrates. That is a description of how the signs relate to each other on a wheel, and nothing more.
To work through a second example, take Scorpio. Its trines are the other water signs, Cancer and Pisces. Its sextiles are Virgo and Capricorn, the two earth signs 60 degrees away. Its opposite is Taurus. Britannica lists Scorpio as passionate, resourceful and jealous, and Cancer as loyal, protective and moody, so in the tradition’s terms a Scorpio and Cancer pairing is two signs “similar enough to understand” each other, with plenty to differ over. Whether that is a good or bad thing for two real people depends on the two people.
Some people use it to look for a soulmate by zodiac sign: pick the sign from the trine column, imagine their qualities, and see whether it fits the person they picture. That can be a useful exercise, because it forces you to put words to what you want. It becomes a problem only if you rule out a person you like because their sign is “wrong”. Astrology is not evidence against anybody.
Numerology and birthday soulmates
Numerology takes the birth date in a different direction. Britannica describes it as the use of numbers to interpret a person’s character or to divine the future, and says that “modern numerology attaches a series of digits to an inquirer’s name and date of birth and from these purports to divine the person’s true nature and prospects.”
Notice the word “purports”. If you have searched for a soulmate by birthday, most of the pages you found next to the zodiac ones are numerology, and they tend to work in one of two ways:
- The Life Path number. The full date of birth, year included, is added up digit by digit and reduced to a single number, and two people’s numbers are compared. Numerologist.com’s compatibility calculator, for example, says the Life Path “is reduced from your full date of birth”.
- The day of the month. Other pages ignore the month and the year and group the days whose digits reduce to the same number. An article syndicated on AOL in March 2026 tells readers to “Disregard birth months” and puts people born on the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th in one group, the same group Parade and Yahoo use in their birth-date soulmate pieces.
The groups do not always agree: one site we read on September 29, 2026 puts the 1st with the 6th, 11th and 14th instead. We describe the methods here so you know what is going on when you see them. We do not endorse any of them as a way to find a person.
The day-of-birth groups and the numbers they are said to match
Since so many people search for exactly this, here is the day-of-the-month list, set out as numerology writers give it. The day is added digit by digit until one digit is left, so the 19th becomes 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Indian numerology calls the result the birth number, psychic number or mulank. On the pages we read, the 31 days fall into nine groups: 1 is the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th, 2 is the 2nd, 11th, 20th and 29th, and so on down the table.
We read five independent numerology pages on September 29, 2026: WomenShine (Pruthaa S Benara, 2021), Astrobelief (2024), AnytimeAstro (2024), AstroSage (2024) and Dr. J C Chaudhry’s psychic number pages. In numerology, people born on the days in the first column are said to get on best with people from the groups in the third column, the groups that most of the lists name. The last column holds groups that only one or two lists add.
| Born on the | Group | Most lists pair it with | Only some lists add |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1, 10, 19, 28 | 1 | 1, 2, 3, 5, 9 | 4, 6, 7 |
| 2, 11, 20, 29 | 2 | 1, 2, 3 | 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 |
| 3, 12, 21, 30 | 3 | 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 | 2, 8 |
| 4, 13, 22, 31 | 4 | 1, 5, 6, 7, 8 | 2, 4, 9 |
| 5, 14, 23 | 5 | 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 | 2, 4, 7, 9 |
| 6, 15, 24 | 6 | 3, 4, 6, 9 | 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 |
| 7, 16, 25 | 7 | 1, 3, 4, 5 | 2, 6, 7, 9 |
| 8, 17, 26 | 8 | 3, 5, 6 | 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 |
| 9, 18, 27 | 9 | 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 | 4, 7 |
The numbers in the last two columns are group numbers, so “3” means people born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th. “Most lists” means more than half of the lists that cover that group. Group 9 is covered by only three of the five, because AstroSage names no matches for it and Astrobelief’s row for 9 cannot be read.
Where the pages differ is worth as much as where they agree. Dr. J C Chaudhry calls 6 and 8 unfriendly to 1, while Astrobelief lists 6 as friendly to 1. For group 8, Chaudhry calls 1, 4, 7, 8 and 9 unfriendly, while AstroSage names 1 and 4 as the most compatible. The same number can be a match on one page and a warning on the next, which is a fair sign of how much weight this system can carry. Every one of these pages sits inside the numerology tradition, and Britannica’s word for what numerology does, “purports”, applies to all of them.
Read the table as a description of what a belief says, and as a way to start a conversation with someone you like. It does not tell you that a person exists, that you will meet them or that one group is better than another.
What a birthday cannot tell you
A birthday cannot tell you any of these things, whichever system reads it:
- A name, a face or a location. No date encodes a person.
- When you will meet. Nothing supports a date for that, from any system.
- Whether a relationship will last. Birthday compatibility is a way of talking about temperament. Long relationships come from what two people do, and the sun signs of the two people are not in that list.
- Whether someone is right for you. You are the only one who can judge that, with time and attention.
If you take a compatibility reading from anywhere, ask what it is actually built on. A percentage and no method is a red flag. Anything that names one exact person from a date is not a reading, it is a guess.
How our reading uses your birthday
The Soulmate Studio asks for your birthday in month and day only, never the year. In the quiz, the question is “When is your birthday?” and it is one of seven quick questions about what draws you to someone first, where you feel most at home, who we should draw, roughly what age they should look, if you like a skin tone, and where your heart is right now.
From your month and day we work out your sun sign, and the reading uses that sign alongside your other answers. On the two dates where the table above and other sources disagree, we follow the calendar used by Cafe Astrology and Horoscope.com: June 21 counts as Cancer and October 23 as Scorpio. Your answers become one portrait in our signature pencil-sketch style, delivered as a high-resolution image ready to print, plus a short written reading of around 300 words. The person in the portrait is imagined from your answers, not predicted, and not a real person. It is made for entertainment and reflection.
We do not use your birth year or your time of birth, and the reading does not calculate a match with a person or predict when you will meet anyone. If you want to see what the reading is like, our sample reading is one written for a set of example answers. The how it works page explains what happens after you finish the quiz.
Example portraitIf you are curious about the bigger idea behind all of this, our article on twin flame vs soulmate explains the difference between the words people use for a destined partner. And if your real question is the plain one, who is my soulmate covers the ways people try to answer it, from quizzes to portraits. When you are ready, you can start your sketch in about a minute.
Common questions
What birthday is your soulmate?
No birthday belongs to your soulmate. Astrology can only say which signs are traditionally paired with yours, such as signs of the same element or signs 60 degrees apart, and a birthday cannot name a person. Use your sign's row in the table as a starting point for reflection, not as a prediction.
What two signs are soulmates?
There is no official pair. Astrologers traditionally treat signs of the same element, such as Aries and Leo, as easy matches, and opposite signs, such as Aries and Libra, as magnetic but challenging. These are conventions of astrology, which Britannica says is not supported by science, so read them as a conversation starter.
Is soulmate compatibility by date of birth accurate?
There is nothing to measure it against, so accuracy is the wrong test. Astrology and numerology are traditions, and Britannica says astrology is not supported by science. Two pages can give opposite matches for the same date. Treat any result as entertainment and a prompt for reflection, and judge a person by how they treat you.
